WHY VOLUNTEER IN GHANA WITH AFRICAN CALABASH VOLUNTEER
Volunteering in Ghana programmes has helped a lot of people to gain experience in their work life and has also helped a lot of underprivileged children to get access to quality education. People who volunteer in Ghana, especially in the rural areas make a great impact in the lives of the needy people they serve.Rural schools are always in a disadvantaged position in terms of access to regular and quality tuition. Many tutors refuse to serve in the rural areas after their training because they prefer to stay in the capital city. However, volunteering in Ghana programmes such as ours is helping to curb this negative tendency which has been affecting the education of the rural children. African Calabash is focusing it's programmes in the rural areas. African Calabash Volunteer is respected so much in Ghana and overseas. We are working hard expand our services to every rural community in Ghana, in order to grant more underprivileged children access to quality education.International volunteers who volunteer in Ghana has been very helpful to our programmes. Some of them donate school supplies, kits for sports and many other educational materials .Children prefer a practical technique as a medium of acquiring formal education. And many tutors in the rural communities lack the required materials to carry out such tutorials .Volunteers who take part in our programmes are contributing immensely in this area. This is why African Calabash Volunteer is calling on Volunteers who want to volunteer in Ghana to consider the rural communities when planning their volunteer vacation.
Our programmes are not limited to the educational sector, because we understand there are other areas we need to develop if we want to achieve the Millennium Developmental Goals. In the health sector, we place volunteers to assist local health workers such as doctors, nurses and other administrative sections of the hospital. Student volunteer, who volunteer in Ghana with us learn practical lessons from experienced health care professionals. There are other volunteers we classify under the health care sector who do not physically work at the hospital.Such volunteers try to reach out to the sick in the community. They sometimes carry out a house to house campaign to educate the public on certain best practices geared towards the prevention of certain diseases.
Some volunteers who volunteer in Ghana, focus on the empowerment of women. Volunteers reach out to women to educate them about their fundamental rights and also resource them to become very useful members of the family unit .Items such as mosquito nets are distributed to pregnant women periodically.
We encourage more volunteers to volunteer in Ghana to help bring an end to gender discrimination, which is very common in the rural areas. Many girls are denied basic education because some families believe, a woman is supposed to serve her husband in the home so they don't consider education to be a very important investment in the girl child. About 80% of the school dropouts and children of school going age who are not enrolled in schools happens to be women .African Calabash Volunteer is working keenly to erase this negative perception in our communities .Majority of women who tend to be affected by this negative perception stay in the remotest part of Ghana. Fortunately for us,we are now able to reach out to some of these children and other needy orphans because of the sponsorship support we are getting from World Vision Ghana. We hope to extend our help to every rural community in the future when we get enough developmental partners.
Some volunteers choose to volunteer in Ghana, because they want to impart knowledge and also to sponsor children in the rural communities. Madam Suzanne Eyers of the Foundation for African Children's Education(FACE), a Canadian based organization is an example of volunteers doing well in this area.Suzzane Eyers volunteers in Ghana annually to sponsor children through their basic level of education.
THE CULTURAL ASPECT OF VOLUNTEERING
One thing that has made volunteering in Ghana unique, is the hospitality of Ghanaians .Ghanaians are very sociable and are always desiring to welcome foreigners in their homes. This is why Volunteers who volunteer in Ghana with African Calabash Volunteer are made to stay with host families to experience the hospitality of Ghanaians and also to learn many useful aspect of our culture .Volunteers who stay with host families learn how to greet in the local language, how to prepare local African foods, how to speak some local languages etc.You will learn how to eat and prepare local food like, banku, fufu, tuo zaafi etc.Ejura is considered as one of the central districts in the country. This is because, the Ejura market, which is one of the biggest markets in the country, draws Ghanaians from the length and breadth of the country to participate in trading activities in Ejura.People from different ethnic groups constitute the inhabitants of the town. This has made Ejura a very rich location of Ghanaian culture. We highly recommend volunteers who want to volunteer in Ghana to consider volunteering with us at Ejura,if they really want to experience typical Ghanaian culture. We also have a vibrant traditional ensemble that trains volunteers to dance some local dances such as adowa and kete.
